Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, who stole the fame from this year’s Miss USA winner, Kristen Dalton from North Carolina, when she said that gay couples shouldn’t be allowed to married, is the latest to hear those two dreaded words from pageant owner Donald Trump: “You’re fired.” Though Prejean stirred up controversy when she answered famous celebrity blogger and Miss USA judge Perez Hilton, who is openly gay, that it is her belief that only straight couples should be legally allowed to marry, Trump and other pageant officials said that those controversial remarks aren’t the reason she’s been relieved of her crown duties. The Miss USA organization is claiming that Prejean hasn’t held her end of the agreement she signed when she entered the pageant. “This was a decision based solely on contract violations, including Ms. Prejean’s unwillingness to make appearances ...

How Many Wings Can You Eat?

    By: admin

By Rachel BurkotIt’s kind of like the national hot dog eating contest that manages to make the news every year—except it’s a wing-eating contest. On Friday, Jan. 30, more than 15,000 people watched inside one of Philadelphia’s sports arenas as 27 men tried to out-eat the others with chicken wings. Apparently, the event is an annual one in Philly. The men have 30 minutes to eat as many chicken wings as they can without getting sick. The winner was Jonathon Squibb, a 23-year-old computer technician from New Jersey. His prize? A $30,000 Mini Cooper. The cost? Inhaling 203 wings at 5 A.M.The attraction of eating contests has puzzled many people for some time—it’s hard to justify such an obvious display of gluttony taking place for fun. The men in Philadelphia were cheered on by “Wingettes,” girls who stood by the ...

She has an undergraduate degree in women’s studies and wants to pursue a master’s degree in family and marriage therapy. However, a recent development has just come about this weekend in Natalie’s story which may halt the transaction entirely. This auction has been going on for several months, although it’s just recently gained mainstream media attention. Newspapers Are Endangered Media Species

    By: Rachel Burkot

We knew it would only be a matter of time until people stopped paying for newspapers. With free news on TV and online, it doesn’t make sense for people to subscribe to print news at a monthly cost. The recession we’re currently in seems to be the straw that broke the camel’s back as far as newspapers are concerned: A news story from Time has at last released a list of the ten most endangered newspapers in America. The papers on the list are likely to either fold entirely or switch to online publishing only in the near future. The top ten are: 1.)The Philadelphia Daily News 2.)The Minneapolis Star Tribune 3.)The Miami Herald 4.)The Detroit News 5.)The Boston Globe 6.)The San Francisco Chronicle 7.)The Chicago Sun-Times 8.)The New York Daily News 9.)The Fort Worth Star-Telegram 10.)The Cleveland Plain Dealer Scary fact number one about this list: These are big city ...

Current recession has potential to become worst since the Great Depression

    By: admin

By Karen Benardello During the 1981-82 recession, which, up until now has been widely considered to be the worst in American history since the Great Depression, inflation soared, unemployment rose to record highs and people who could previously afford to buy their own food began lining up at soup kitchens. However, the current recession has the potential to cripple the American economy even more if it stretches into next month. If it does, it will become the longest of the ten American recessions that have occurred since the end of World War II. Newspaper headlines have been adamantly comparing the current recession to the one that hit in early ‘80s, which lasted from July 1981 until November 1982, when the national unemployment rate spiked to 10.8 percent. This past January, for example, showed a loss of 207,000 manufacturing jobs, ...

Bad Economy Leads to Low Morale

    By: admin

By Rachel Burkot Some would argue that the worst thing about a bad economy is the morale. Everybody’s worried about something, from making all the monthly payments to finding a new job after being laid off. For some, stress takes form in more significant ways than others. In places where the recession hasn’t really hit yet, there is more anxiety than stress. Where recession has reared its ugly head, the emotions only begin with stress and lead to anger, hopelessness and depression. Anxiety can be just as bad these emotions, thanks to the ripple effect that comes from low morale. A new poll from the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation finds that eight out of ten Americans say things are going badly in this country today, and nearly three out of four Americans are angry over the state of things. Those numbers are six ...
